A Wedding Guest’s Guide to Wayne County, PA: Where to Stay, Eat & Explore

If you’ve been invited to a wedding in Wayne County, PA, you’re in for more than just a ceremony. About two hours from New York City and Philadelphia, this corner of the Poconos has a beautiful lake, small towns worth exploring, and restaurants worth going back to.

At Carley Brook, the majority of our wedding guests travel in from out of state, and the same questions come up every time: where to stay, where to eat, and whether there’s anything worth doing beyond the ceremony itself. This guide answers all three, with enough detail to actually plan around.

Where to Stay for a Wayne County Wedding?

Where to Stay for a Wayne County Wedding

Honesdale and Hawley have the most options, and they’re both close enough to most venues that you won’t be driving far on the wedding day itself.

Book early if the wedding falls in summer or fall. This is a small-town lodging market, not a city with a hundred hotels to fall back on, and rooms go fast once the season picks up, sometimes months out. If the wedding is specifically near Lake Wallenpaupack, our guide to planning a wedding near the lake goes deeper into lodging right on the water.

Where to Eat Near Honesdale and Hawley, PA?

Both small towns have more good food than you’d expect for their size.

What to Eat in Downtown Honesdale?

  1. Twisted Rail Tavern is one of the most reliably recommended spots downtown, the kind of place locals actually point people to, not just what shows up first in a search.
  2. JAGs on Main does global street food, bowls and wraps built around falafel, gyro, and steak, good if you want something quick and a little different.
  3. Tick Tock’s on Terrace is a solid pick for steaks and seafood with a full bar.
  4. For something more upscale, a rehearsal dinner or a quieter night out, Native offers an elevated American menu with locally sourced ingredients in a modern setting, and
  5. Bistro 1202 inside the Hotel Wayne is Honesdale’s only AAA Diamond Rated restaurant, with a CIA-trained chef and a menu that runs from slow-roasted brisket to refined starters.

Where to Eat in Hawley, PA?

  1. The Ridge, an Italian grille at the historic Hotel Belvidere in downtown Hawley, is a solid pick for a sit-down dinner, scratch-made pasta, and fresh seafood; reservations are strongly recommended on weekends.
  2. The Homestead Restaurant + Lounge at The Eldred Preserve is technically just over the New York state line in Eldred, about 20 minutes from Hawley, but worth the drive, with house-aged steaks, farm-to-table fare, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a covered outdoor patio for warmer months.

Breweries and Casual Spots in Honesdale

  • Here & Now Brewing Company pours local craft beer out of a beautifully restored former Woolworth’s building on Main Street, with rotating taps, scratch-made food, and a genuinely good atmosphere.
  • Runaway Train Brewery leans into the town’s railroad history, with 14 craft beers on tap, live music, and indoor and outdoor seating right next to the historic D&H railroad tracks.

Things to Do in Honesdale, Hawley, and Around Lake Wallenpaupack

Things to Do in Honesdale, Hawley, and Around Lake Wallenpaupack

If you’re making a full weekend of it in Wayne County, there’s genuinely more here than most first-time visitors expect. Fall is particularly worth planning around; our fall weddings in the Poconos guide breaks down what the region looks like during peak foliage season if that’s when you’re visiting.

1. Ride the Stourbridge Line Between Honesdale and Hawley

In 1829, the Stourbridge Lion made its first run in Honesdale, the first commercial steam locomotive to run on rails in the country, which is why the town is still known as the birthplace of the American railroad. A full-scale replica sits at the Wayne County Historical Society Museum downtown, and the crosswalks are painted like train tracks in its honor. The song “Winter Wonderland” was also written by a Honesdale native, inspired by the town’s own Central Park.

The Stourbridge Line runs scenic excursions along the Lackawaxen River between Honesdale and Hawley in vintage railcars, a good way to fill a few hours the day before or after the wedding.

2. Spend Time on Lake Wallenpaupack

Lake Wallenpaupack is the other big draw in Wayne County. It’s a massive man-made lake, 5,700 acres, 13 miles long, with 52 miles of shoreline, built in the 1920s as part of a hydroelectric project. Today it’s mostly known for boating, fishing, and just sitting by the water. The Lake Wallenpaupack Dam Overlook is worth a quick stop for the view alone, and boat tours run out of a few different spots around the lake if you want to get out on the water without renting your own.

3. Hike the Trails at Lacawac Sanctuary

For something quieter, Lacawac Sanctuary sits on 550 acres along the shore of Lake Wallenpaupack, with over 8 miles of hiking trails winding through it. At the center of the sanctuary is Lake Lacawac itself, a small 52-acre glacial lake so untouched it’s been designated a National Natural Landmark. It’s a genuinely peaceful spot if you want an hour or two away from wedding logistics.

4. Walk Around Downtown Honesdale

Downtown Honesdale is walkable and full of small shops and antique stores, worth a slow morning if you’re not in a rush anywhere. The Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary and its glass museum are worth the drive too, especially if anyone in your group is into art or local history.

What to Know Before Your Wayne County Wedding Weekend?

Wayne County is genuinely rural, and that changes how you should plan the logistics side of things before you arrive.

Plan Transportation Before You Arrive in Wayne County

Rideshare apps barely work outside of the main towns, and sometimes not even there. Uber and Lyft coverage is thin to nonexistent once you’re outside Honesdale or Hawley, and a lot of venues, barns, lakeside resorts, and historic manors sit spread out on their own property with nothing within walking distance. Renting a car is genuinely the safest bet if you’re flying in or coordinating a carpool with other guests who are driving up.

If the couple has hired a coordinator, they’re often the best person to ask about shuttle logistics. Our wedding coordinator vs. wedding planner guide explains the difference if you’re not sure who to reach out to.

What to Wear to an Outdoor Wedding in Wayne County?

Footwear matters more than people expect here. A lot of Wayne County venues have outdoor ceremony spaces on grass, stone patios, or barn floors, and heels sink into all three. Block heels or flats will serve you a lot better than stilettos, whatever the wedding website’s dress code says about formality.

Cell Service, Navigation, and Getting Around Without Reliable Data

Wayne County is rural enough that cell coverage drops off once you leave the main corridors, and GPS doesn’t always account for private roads or venue entrances that aren’t well-signed. A few things worth doing before you leave:

  • Download offline maps before you go: Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline downloads; do it at home, not once you’re already in the Poconos.
  • Screenshot the venue address and any directions the couple shares: A screenshot works without a signal.
  • Follow venue-specific directions over your GPS: Rural venue entrances are often unmarked or easy to miss on default routing.
  • Verizon has the most reliable rural coverage in Wayne County: AT&T and T-Mobile are workable in the main towns but can drop on back roads.
  • Designate one navigator per car: One person with offline maps beats four people with spotty service.

Wayne County isn’t a place people usually plan a whole vacation around, but it’s a genuinely good place to spend a wedding weekend: good food, a real lake, real history, and enough to do that you won’t run out of plans before the ceremony even starts.
